Prelithiation
Prelithiation adds a controlled amount of lithium to lithium-ion battery materials—boosting energy density and extending lifetime.
What is prelithiation good for?
Pre-lithiation is a materials refinement step that compensates for lithium loss during the first cycle. For state-of-the-art batteries, it enables:
1. Higher energy density (improved initial coulmbic efficiency)
2. Longer cycle life
3. Lower cost per kWh (or per delivered capacity)
How does prelithiation work?
Prelithiation introduces a reservoir of active lithium that is consumed during the initial formation cycle.
By offsetting first-cycle lithium consumption, more lithium remains available for normal operation—improving usable capacity and performance in applications such as electric vehicles and consumer electronics.
